Frequently asked questions
What is time-and-a-half?
Time-and-a-half means 1.5 times your normal hourly rate. At $20 an hour, overtime pays $30 an hour. Ten overtime hours are worth $300 instead of $200.
Who qualifies for overtime pay?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), most non-exempt employees must be paid overtime for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some salaried, executive, administrative and professional roles are exempt, and some states (such as California) require daily overtime too.
Does this calculator do double time?
No — it calculates overtime at 1.5× only, which is the federal standard. A few states and union contracts pay double time for some hours; that is not included here.
Is overtime pay taxed differently?
No. Overtime pay is taxed as ordinary wages — federal tax, state tax, Social Security and Medicare all apply. It can push a paycheck into a higher withholding bracket, but your annual tax rate does not change just because of overtime.
